OH, I KNOW WHY

Matt Ager

23.9.-4.11.2018

For Matt Ager’s solo exhibition, SUNDY becomes a setting for examining the artist’s use of materials and ready made objects. Combining seemingly basic, yet sophisticated ways of fabrication, the works redefine the original socio-cultural meaning of the employed materials and techniques.

Upon entering the space we see two partition screens in the shape of human profiles facing each other - nose to nose. The setting is intimate considering their scale, filling almost the entire space. The artist has a repertoire - a whole archive of profiles that he keeps for reference. The outlines become like another material, considered for its texture and consistency, contributing to the non-hierarchical way materials and shapes are used - typical for Ager’s work.

There are frequent resemblances to functional and domestic materials. Although these references seem to become more abstract in this most recent series. More than objects they start to suggest body parts or mechanisms while maintaining a sense of intimacy.
